Sony Ericsson G900i and G700i: Bringing touch-screen to the masses
Finally, Sony Ericsson brings touchscreen capability to the general consumer with the latest G900i and G700i, announced during the recent Mobile World Congress (MWC). The G-series is a new lettering series from Sony Ericsson, implying a new market segment (G for 'General', perhaps?). Loaded with Symbian UIQ operating system, Sony Ericsson promises that the phone can be operated as normal without the need of the touch-screen. This is very much welcome by yours truly. Personally, I like the compactness of the normal mobile phones but the convenience of a touch-screen for navigating calendar entries and cursors. With the P-series moving away from the keypad to a QWERTY-only design, the G-series fills this void. Although not positioned as a corporate workhorse, I do hope it has the processing power of the P-series with improved interface responsiveness.
The G900i sports a 5-megapixel auto-focus camera plus Wifi, while the G700i only comes with 3-megapixel fixed-focus camera without Wifi. Other specs are unclear, especially on whether the UIQ interface differs from the P1i.
Sony Ericsson hits the Windows Mobile market with X1 XPERIA
Sony Ericsson introduces another new series, X1 (X for XPERIA). Looks like a rip-off from the HTC and WM-equivalent, although I believe the standby screen will be customised as like other brands. The specs include a 3.2 megapixel camera, Wifi, 400MB internal memory, HSPA. Plus the MicroSSD support, it's sounding more and more like an attempt by Sony Ericsson to grab a pie in the Windows Mobile market. Also, the connectors are no longer proprietory: included is a 3.5mm jack for headset and a mini-USB port. From the publicity video, it looks like the X1 has accelerator feature (auto-orientation).
Sony Ericsson C902 and C702: Cybershot with built-in GPS
This is Sony Ericsson's first mobile phone with built-in GPS. With the new C-series (I guess C stands for Cybershot), the C902 and C702 packs with loads of photo-editing applications, including face detection and a better photo flash for night photography. Both phones are also resistant to dust and moisture, making this new C-series. Like the G-series, the C-series comes with 2 models to meet different budgets. The C902 comes with a 5 megapixel autofocus camera while the C702 is only 3.2 megapixel. However, the C702 has a larger screen at 2.2 inches while the C902 is only 2 inches. Both comes with built-in 160MB memory to make sure you have plenty of storage for videos and images.
