Sigma takes a bold step by introducing DP1, a compact digital camera that is fitted with the sensor as large as a DSLR with 1.5x crop (APS-C). Although effectively a 14-megapixel camera, the final image output size is only 4-megapixel because the FOVEON X3 sensor is stacked on top of one another, each capturing one primary light colour. Plus, its lens is fixed at 28mm with f4 aperture. No other camera makers have manufactured a fixed-range digital compact camera in the past decade.DP1 is really catered for the very avant garde market segment who goes for rangefinders kind of cameras. If DP1 proves to be commercially successful, I hope Sigma will launch other models in various fixed ranges like 50mm, 85mm, 135mm. What will make DP1 successful? - unparalleled image quality. I would expect nothing less out of a X3 sensor plus a fixed range lens. - minimal shot-to-shot shutter lag. It must perform as fast as a DSLR to avoid the slowness inherent in all compact cameras. - high ISO noise. Again, with a APS-C sensor, I believe image noise at the maximum ISO 800 should be managed like a piece of cake. |
